I'm finally dusting off the DS II miniatures I bought years ago and I'm
wondering what's the best way to base out the grav tanks? I'm thinking of
mounting them on a rectangular base (properly flocked) with a wire flight
base. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Hi Mark, I use the black square rect. bases too. I also use the just the base
part of the clear round flight bases. These I like because it gives the
illusion of flight and you can see the terrain your over just like the "real"
thing.

Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
I just had a brainstorm! I've got some old plasti-card that I've cut
into
1"X1/2" rectangles (thank goodness I had a X-acto miter box and a razor
saw for this). Then taking some cylindrical air gun pellets (in this case
Crosman Copperheads.177 caliber) I glue them to the center of the base. Then I
paint and flock the base, then affix the painted mini on the top!
I'm also going to look into some magnetic stripping for the underside of the
base so I can transport them on a metal tray.

OH! I forgot to mention: I'm going to have to bore out a larger hole on the
bottom of the mini to seat the air gun pellet. But that shouldn't be too much
trouble.

First attempt -- I used some earring backs which were clear plastic,
looked like:

where the ::: is the "handle" and the | is a clear plastic disk. It's
just big enough to support the miniature without it tipping over and I had a
bunch on-hand from a Victorian Sci-Fi project where I used the disks as
propellers.
But my latest attempt (untried, as yet) -- is to use plain metal
thumb-tacks. This has the added advantage of being magnetic -- strip of
magnet in the bottom of the box and this will hold -- hopefully. I have
the parts but I haven't tried this yet.
