Between equal players, FTFB is pretty balanced. This doesn't mean every
combination of ships is balanced, but if you vary your ships, you should be
able to find something that works. If
you can't, it implies the players aren't equal--if I were
fighting Oerjan, for example, I'd want extra points just to make it fair. So
next time, instead of taking 1500 points a side, you take 1700. If that
doesn't work, try 1850. Or 2000. When you both agree it's an even match, stick
with it..... And when you learn more and start winning more, don't forget to
drop your points total back down.

If this Steve is a decent gamer, he'd rather have a challenge than just to
massacre you every time. If he's actually a Munchkin Power Gamer, I don't
know, maybe start him off with D&D
("My starting character is a 44th level half-dark-elf /
half-giant fighter/thief/cleric whose father is a god and whose
mother is queen of Aquilonia") and then consign him to playing GW stuff.

<chuckle> Even after I've checked your ship designs so they're
optimized? ;-)

Natch, he didn't fall for it <G> But to make things fair, you can check
my ships as well ;-)

Mind you, one of my fleets - the Cha'ka-Lah Raiders - consists almost
exclusively of high-thrust boarding ships... Depending on what boarding
rules we use, it might actually be even <g>
