Greetings all! GenCon was a blast. I did not get in as much gaming as I would
have liked, but I could only be in one place at a time. I thoroughly enjoyed
the Full Thrust games that Dean ran, and was surprised to find a DSII game
featuring Bolos from the Laumer books. I got to talk with one of my favorite
authors, Elizabeth Moon, and hobnobbed with several game designers. I even met
an old Navy buddy that I had not seen in over fifteen years!

I did manage to pick up the dropship, Jaime. It went for $100 USD.

I understand that some GZG games and demos are being run at PentaCon....any
one have more info?

Yo, Gleen! It was great meeting you, and the lovely lady with you. ;->=

Likewise, didn't get near the gaming planned, though finally played
vacc-head style, and once again confirmed plenty of fun left in
near-straight FTII.

Still, John Rhys Davies proved that my Welsh charm is no fluke, and Virginia
Hey proved there's indeed something special about women from Oz.

Even though Megan was not there, it was nice to be able to give her White
Wolf's news. I'm sure when my daughter tells my niece, there should be an
interesting tantrum from that 'changeling'.

Well, saw Dean and Mike, and while Mark said he'd gotten kiboshed early on, I
didn't hear the results of gaming, so THAT proves I've no future as a
cyber-journalist. Suffice to say, while the miniatures area was very
disappointing to many of us, smaller than previous GenCon's and just a small
percentage of the room devoted to board games, GZG representation was quite
healthy.

Jacking out, this is...

The FT and DS games we ran were always full. Some were sold out but there
are always no-shows but those slots always seemed to get filled quickly.

Thursday I ran 2 FT demos, they went well.

Friday I did my Sci-Fi Crossover: Empires & Rebels scenarios. The 12:30
game resulted in the Star Wars Rebels rolling over the Klingons, partially due
to the card based initiative system that I used which allowed all the
rebels to go before the Klingon B-10 battleship had a chance to fire
back. The 5:00 game had the Klingons blowing up all the Rebels. The initiative
was fixed, but the Rebels lost their fighters early because they didn't adjust
fighter tactics to the modified fighter rules I was using.

Saturday was the FT Admiral's Tournament. 8 players showed up and went at it.
This year's champion was Sidre Cools Berg from Oslo, Norway (a long way to go
for a convention). Since you could only use a fleet one time this year, he
played the 3 Phalon fleets in the first 3 rounds and the ESU Carrier fleet in
the finals.

Thanks to GZG, Valiant Models, and JR Miniatures for providing prizes for the
tourney and other games.

I hope to have pictures of these games and the con up this weekend.

Overall GenCon was similar in that there were a lot of the same faces around,
like James, the guy running the Miniatures area, but there were differences.
Better food choices were available. Lines were very long (like out the door
around the building long) if you didn't have your badge sent to you but I
didn't have to worry about them. Indianapolis has a nice convention center and
GenCon wasn't using all the available room so it can grow.

Some Indy businesses understood the potential market and adjusted (the Hard
Rock Cafe stayed open late Thursday and was showing Star Wars on their TV
screens) while others closed early when there were hungry and thirsty gamers
roaming the streets.

Talk to Mike Miserendio, [gui_nut@yahoo.com] for more info about running
GZG games. He is organizing GZG games for PentaCon like he organized the GZG
games for GenCon. PentaCon is November 7, 8, and 9 in Fort Wayne, Indiana
