I had a copy in the late 70's / early 80's. If it is
essentially the same, I'd say that it was...mmm...I guess I'd say "bland".
Didn't have the texture to seem real.

I was also going to say that it seemed unbalanced in favor of the MI, but on
reflection that could be due to my opponent.

I played the late '70's version and have to say that the game was actually
very close when it came to MI vs Bugs, but that MI vs Skinnies was usually a
walkover.

Each MI figure represented one man or several bugs, IIRC.

I heard from somewhere (can't remember the source) that the new version of ST
is nothing like the old, but since I haven't played it or even seen the
rules...

BTW I'm very impressed. There have been what?...at least 6 posts in a thread
with the two words STARSHIP and TROOPERS in them and there has yet to be one
flame. Bravo!

We're talking about the GAME not the BOOK/MOVIE. The Avalaon Hill game
was a
good attempt to catch the nature of the BOOK. About the movie -
deponent sayeth naught.

I have both versions. I played the original a few times, but it was hard to
play solitaire against the bugs as the bugs needed to map out their complexes
on a hex map. It was fun, though, and the first squad level game I saw that
had a TO&E as part of the rules.

I have the movie version, too. I haven't played it yet, but it's entiresly
different. It's simpler, the pieces are stand up and have a higher production
quality (but you're talking the difference between the late 70s and the mid
90s in game production). The game plays pretty quickly. I bought it because it
had a lot of good reviews.

Whether or not you liked the movie, the movie's game looks like fun. To Mark
S., the originator of this thread: if you're thinking of getting the movie
game I can bring it to GenCon and we can give it a try. I don't know if we'd
have time to squeeze in a game of the original game, but the movie game is
possible.

Just to clarify... I was thinking of geting the original version. However, I
have decided to hold off in the meantime. Maybe with the next paycheck. At the
same time, I just ordered a copy of Omega Warrior from Flag Ship games. Since
the game is geared for PA combat, I was wondering if I could use it to play
Starship Troopers (the book) games. I'll give a capsle review when it comes
in.
