Subject: ARMORED CARS

I know that when we got our V-100 armore cars we all loved the extra
protection it offered, but intensely disliked its puny armament.

first it was ancient.30-cal MG (that worked!) then M-73 MG that worked
about half the time.

we were always packing unauthorized weapons in an effort to increase our
firepower.

extra M-60 LMGs mounted to fire off the top and over the rear and rear
sides. no tureeret' just a roof top escape hatch from the personnel
compartment..

M-79 GL fired through firing aperturedsin the front and sides, along
with M-16s, and finallya bizzaro looking USN belt fed and hand
cranked GL scrounged from the RIVERINE guys when they started going
home replaced the rear M-60.

and we saw the ARVNs V-100s with .50-cal HMG and an M-73 mounted in
their turrets but could not ge them.

those of us who had been to europe wished we had some of those big UK armored
cars with the 90mm main gun and MGs, or even some French ones!

but still it beat a soft skinned jeep to hell and back as a fighting vehicle.

y'all know, i m consistantly surprissed to see scenarios involving AFVs and
such being ignord bygamers in all sets of rules.

SG II would work very nice for a convoy escort, or patrol of AFVs, or a reco
unit of smae having to deal with determined grunts in ambush or defensive
positions.

Most Australian M-113s have a V-100's turret on them BTW, one with
2 MGs or an HMG and an MG.

All the Scorpions are gone now. They've been taking the 76mm turret off and
putting on the 30mm Rarden turrets from the Fox armoured car.

There was a Scorpion variant with a 90mm gun (Belgian design IIRC) that was
used by the Belgians and Singapore and maybe others.

Those would be Light Tanks. The Saladin was the armored car. The Saladin had a
90mm Main Gun.

The Fox had the 30mm Rarden. Foxes were just coming off the line during
Vietnam. The Saladin's had been around for years. Heck the Saracen Wheeled APC
was around for the Malayan Emergency.

Must have been nice. Closest I've gotten to a Saladin was on top of the turret
and at the driver's hatch at TanksAlot. I took a bunch of
photo's. Course, I do have my own ferret Mk2/3 so its not all that
bad. Lookind down into the Stalwart at Tanks Alot had me strongly fearing ever
having to work on one of those beasts. The size of the gearbox, transfer box,
PTO for the Pumpjets, controls arms for the 4 wheel steering and all the other
bits seriously scared me (most of
the parts are really common with the Saracen/Saladins. I'll stick to
mucking about with the sufficiently complex and intimidating
B60/W.E.P-S.Gearbox on the ferret. This weekend saw a happy event on
00DA61. The Fluid coupling had zero loss of fluid after 1000 miles of use in
my hands. A non leaky fluid coupling is a really good thing when you can't get
the REME to fix it for you.
