Though I love Farragut (anyone with Glasgow as a middle name can't be all bad)
and the bastardized "Damn The Pulse Torpedos! Full Thrust NOW!" as a tagline
(catchy! plus wargamers will know the reference at least vaguely), I have
another thought:

A Con shirt.

By that, I mean we put the generic quote/logo on the front. On the back,
we feature a number of text entries next to check boxes.

GZG-ECC I (98)
GZG-ECC II (99)
GZG-ECC III Y2K (00)
GZG-ECC IV 01 (First of the Millenia)
etc (insert other events that should be on the list)

etc. We did this for a large project team at work. The idea being you could
check off the parts you went to. It worked pretty well.

Also, I think this adds "date/event" specific linkage without tying the
shirts to this particular event - a danger if you have to order some
minimum number. Make it something that can sell to non-attending gamers,
or next year at the con, and you have a more viable design.

As for evangelism, I just ran an SG2 event at Autumn Assault in November (have
the AAR half written and all the maps drawn) and am conducting an
intro to FT FB for two guys at work this weekend (with Tom M) - New
French Republic meets the NI (why not I says?). And of course, preaching to
the converted, 'Los and I will be running a whompin' big scenario at
GZG ECC - 5 or 6 tables put together and several hundred figs and a
bunch of vehicles. So... that'll keep me busy till post February.:)

So far, since taking up this game, I've added 3 solid FT players, and another
two or three part time ones, who also sometimes double into the SG2 world. So
that's not too bad...!:) (and no, I'm not looking for a hero cookie!)

The point remains, we should take advantage of the last year of this Millenia
(2000) to try very hard to demo FT and SG2 and DS2 at as many public events as
possible. The larger the gamer base, the more work we force Jon, his lackeys,
assistants, and sculptors to do!:)

Agreed. Running games at conventions is the best way to promote the game. I
very rarely see any GZG games run at any of the regional conventions. Cold
Wars, Historicon, and Fall In, the three big historical
minis cons, didn't have any GZG games lists in their on-site books.
Even
though a number of sci-fi games at these cons, GZG is just not
represented
in the programs. I've seen a few pick-up games run, but if a game is
not
advertised in the PEL or on-site book, it isn't going to attract too
many new players. BTW, Cold Wars 00 PEL deadline is 6 Jan 00.

Well, now while I haven't been to too many historical minis cons, the one I
did attend a few years ago I ran an FT game at (they asked me to come to the
con, run some games; due to my schedule could only run one game). So it was in
the book.

One person showed for my game. Others wandered by, looked, sneered a little,
then went on to a Napoleonics or Civil War game (two heavily represented games
at that con that year). This really didn't surprise me much since it was a
*historical* con and I'm there with a futuristic game (I didn't have Dirtside
or StarGrunt at the time, much less being very versed in either). They invited
me back last year but I was already going to be out of
town/
state for that weekend.

Just one experience here; not meant to be all-encompassing.

That's great, but we need more of it.

Napoleonics and Civil War are always heavily represented at historical cons.

I get the same response when I run my Vietnam games, so it probably wasn't
because you were running FT. <g> The big HMGS cons have a check box for
"Futuristic" and "Other" on their game host registration forms, so they must,
at least, be willing to have such games run at their conventions.

I attend Coldwwars and Historicon regurlarly--and occassionally run
games. A few (3?) of years ago at Coldwars a ran a Full Thrust game that I
created on
the spot and registered at the desk--mostly because that was the year we
had the snow storm hit just before the convention and several game masters
weren't able to make it in (including the one for a game I had signed up

for). In spite of the late registration of the Full Thrust game (1/2
hour before start), I had about 6 people playing. Of course, that was under
what I would consider fluke conditions, but just goes to show that you never
really know how much attendance you'll have...

That would be tough at a historical con. I guess you could classify your
game as future history or come-out-and-make-history game. ;-)

Interesting that I found several historical (and well done) gaming events at
Origins where I expected to see almost all sci-fi related.
