I think I need to get out more. My Anime experience is Robotech and reading
some Star Blazers comics. I can't bring myself to convert Robotech over unless
I add the dreaded Minmei device (stops all enemy ships for 1D6 turns??) Or
maybe the "Facts of Life" attack for fighters (When Mirya showed Dana).
Realistically (I hate that word in gaming) the Zentraedi
would destroy the SDF-1 with little trouble. I guess you could make a
special "what kind of attack" table: 1-3 Rouge Zentraedi Battle Pods
attack, 4 Maniacal (sp) Cruiser captain attacks, 5 Relief Commander attacks, 6
Whole bunch of ships attack but only one can fire per turn and
only 1/4 of its weapons.
These other series sound _much_ more "game-able".

Er, not really... not with Full Thrust anyway. The LoGH (Legend of the
Galactic Heroes) battles really *are* thousands of ships (13,000 per
fleet on one side, with 3-4 fleets at the start of the series, vs.
25,000 on the Imperial side) and they basically have fixed forward guns
only. (Well, there are side guns, but those are mostly anti-fighter
defences I think.) Basically, the ships are all *very* long and have a *very*
small radial profile. (I think that's the phrase.) Think 'Discovery', but more
massive and with several banks of laser cannon taking up the front part.

OTOH, some kind of "grand tactical" combat might be interesting, but I
have no idea how one would go about writing such a thing. ^_^;;

Well yes, but they were under strict orders to capture the ship (relatively)
intact. That gets a bit hard when the crew doesn't agree. Thus we had the
probing attacks and a few maniac commanders acting on their own.

The numbers are a bit screwy though... the Zentraedi had a bazillion
times numerical superiority to wipe out the pesky Veritech squadrons --
why didn't they?

When total conflict bloomed, SDF-1 had allied with Breetai's fleet.

I've been trying to toy around with the Robotech/Macross genre FT rules
for quite some time, the one problem seems to be making the Zentraedi ships,
even scaling the ships systems and mecha down by a factor of 10, they are
always Superships!! After playtesting some battles on this scale, we've
decided to hold off on the idea, moving several hundred fighter squadrons a
turn is a bit taxing.... (wait, did i move that squadron yet?!?!?!?).

The chance to play in this genre is one that several local players are
interested in, but we've chosen Macross II as the series of choice, at least
the earthers have a fleet of captured Zentraedi ships to play with.

Just using up my dime!

Well... think about it. If you convert any real carrier to a FT carrier with
most obvious real world stats (number of planes), they'd almost
always turn up as 2-4 times larger than the FT fleet carrier.

Obviously, it's pointless trying to replicate real world stats, you should go
for the look & feel factor.

The Zentraedi ships *are* big (just how big depends on the translation you
believe). But they're also manned by giants, meaning more empty space, space
for life support etc. etc.

The sheer amount of wave guns is staggering, though. And they don't really
have any smaller ships, only fighters and very big capitals...

Actually, those are allied micronized zentraedi. Like Mush from the OAVs.
