RE: The quality of Colonial marines
I can only assume this off-topic went SO overlong because we love the
movie
so...
After 'it's only a movie' codicle, I guess I just assumed the 'best' title
applied early in the movie was Burke blowing sunshine.
RE: Figs and other stuff

I have absolutely no idea if it's still generally available, but I do know
that there was a Sulaco model. I put one together for a friend a few years
back and IIRC he gave it to Doug (The Beast) for a birthday present.
Good hunting, it wasn't a bad model and it wasn't too bad to put together,
although it wasn't up to the standards of Italiari or Monogram.

Right-o. That would be Halcyon. Far as I know it's long OOP, but I do
see it
available from time-to-time. About 8 inches long, it's worth the search,
though I'd hesitate on some of the high prices I've seen asked.
Halcyon also put out a 1/35 APC, a 1/72 dropship, and an unknown-to-me
scale
Narcissus. We'll leave out the 1/9 warrior, queen, dog-alien, etc, as
not suitable for gaming. Unless you use original GI Joes, of course.
Say, Bill, would you like to take on the APC??? Off-size, but I'm
getting tired of the s**t I get when I put the Bradley at the exit of my 3D
Aliens board game.
;->=
One thing that struck me was how the Sulaco looked so like a pulse rifle. I'm
planning on trying to take an Evil Empire(tm) melta-gun, cut off the
nozzle and put it on the rear, and add some antenna to the front.

It says it's been discontinued, but places like Target and Toys 'R' Us often
have them laying around. You want AliensTM Collection #2, No. 74848. eBay
might be a possible source of this and more of the old Leading Edge minis.

I just sold some of the LEG figs on eBay. While I didn't get the $45US and
$25US
for the Marines/Aliens and Colonist's Last Stand listed on Sci-Fi's
Aliens collection list, I was quite satisfactorily rewarded. To the point of
suggesting avoiding this route.
The micro machines apparently didn't do well; I found them on sale and once in
awhile still do. A plus is the set that has the Sulaco also has the alien
warrior. If you can find it in quantity, it's worth close to full price. The
LEG warriors worked out to over $6US a fig if you include shippage.
I'd like to suggest substitution and building. The old Kryomek line included
alien-style figs, tho' the 'warriors' are pretty tall, and the hellions
have worm bodies. Some of the humans were, I think, from Gren's Future Wars
series,
soon to be re-released from Nemo/Stratilberi(sp?), who make EXCELLENT
CM's.
Of course, GW's Catachan, Mordians, and Stormtroopers Imperial Guards are
a possibility, if you can get by the Rambo/Arnold build.
Don't forget, though, that the basic alien build is a skeleton. I once took a
couple of old GW plastic skeletons, carved some round sprue pieces into
roughly a 'bean' shape, cut the mouth off the skeleton head and glued to the
front of the 'bean'. I added some simple carving slivers on the back. Never
did get around to putting on a tail.
Now, the thing looked pretty silly with clenched fists, and I so seldom do
modeling that any comments can be chalked up to patronization in the guise of
encouragement, but even with a simple gloss black paint job, some folks seemed
genuinely impressed. I can only image what effect it would have had with some
detail on the skull, and a good drybrush highlighting.
I know that the Future Wars line had some resin apc's, as I believe GZG/
Geohex does, that could easily convert to a CM's. And a LOT cheaper than
trying to find the LEG lead version. Which I do have, but never assembled.
;->=
Still hunting the dropship, though...

> I know that the Future Wars line had some resin apc's, as I believe
I have the lead one as well, and have even assembled it. It's very skinny, and
doesn't look quite right...but it works fine with the
slightly-smaller-than-25mm Denizen Mid-Tech Marines, who are dead
ringers for the Colonial Marines. For the Dropship and the APC, there were a
pair of resin models available from Grendel a few years ago, and I seem to
remember hering something about them being re-released. The APC is
great
-- not exactly like the Aliens version, but pretty darned close. The
Dropship is quite nice, but is a lot smaller than the official one, and
does not have the wings. Of course, I have the 1/72nd version, so I'm
content.
Just for the record, my page of Aliens-to-ShockForce conversions (
http://www.voicenet.com/~johncrim/Marines.html )also includes a long
list
of figure/model suggestions.... I hope to get a scanner next weekend,
so I'll be posting picutres of most of them soon.
Oh, and I just saw a review of a miniature ship that looks like the crashed
Alien ship from the first movie -- the one piloted by "The Space
Jockey". Tom Pope reviewed it on r.g.m.m. Is he out there? If not, I'll dig up
the URL. They look nice.
> John Crimmins wrote:
Who? What? Me?
Yeah, I'm "out here" I guess... (it's Monday, I can't make any claims to
coherence yet)
The alien ship is indeed pretty nice. Decently close to the movie model (I
compared it to pictures in H. R. Giger's book) The detail is not as good as
the FT line, but good enough for the subject matter.
Plus, he's only charging $1.00 each, which doesn't suck!
The Tripods and Martian Invaders were pretty cool too, but that's another
(off)topic...

A friend of mine has 1/72nd scale resin APCs made by a company called
'Gonzoid' (sp?). He got them from Comet Miniatures in the UK:
http://www.cometminiatures.co.uk
He bought a couple some years ago, so they could well have disappeared by now.
> One thing that struck me was how the Sulaco looked so like a pulse
I've almost finished a ship made from the gun of a Japanese giant robot kit
(not sure what type - it was in a sale so I snapped it up). Same idea, I
guess, although this is around 3" long.

The other advantage is that the Sulaco set also has the drop ship which would
do (at a pinch) for 1/300th. You could then split the cost with a DS2
player

Err.. if some enterprising company were to so do, they'd need to know
just how big a real dropship is (feet / inches or metres would do just
fine). I have the Aliens Colonial Manual but I can't remember how much detail
there is on the drop ship. I don't recall seeing any useful plans, although I
haven't opened that book for some time. (Highly coincidentally
the author, Lee Brimmicombe-Wood, is sat at his desk twenty feet from
mine - he's a games designer working on the same game as I am
currently).

The company is KUJU Entertainment (we release games under the Glass Ghost

published by Mindscape. It's a helicopter sim, I'm only helping out doing
some FX work while they ramp up towards Beta - I normally do SF games,
funnily enough....

Ok, but watch out for those SAM-launching 'roos...
Straying all the way on the topic again, I believe there's an
apc-carrying
dropship in the GZG, though I don't think it's carried by GeoHex here in the
colonies. Anywhere near the Aliens version?

Its also got a light APC that fits inside, its *not* Aliens ( meaning the APC
is a very good match)

Yepper, as a good not-Aliens, it requires a bit of change, but
a SMALL bit (drop the middle wheels, move the gun turret to the rear). Or even
replace the turret. Something even I'd attempt.
As I feared, the drop ship isn't available in the US. An
interesting piece, but less a not-Aliens. ;->=
I seem to recall some discussion about this piece earlier on the list. KR's
busy enough with other items; I can live with out this one.
Now, the Hammer's APC I've been hearing about... ;->=

Why not???

There is a Combat Car with 3 Tri Barrel Power Gun mounts due to come out?
I have this APC and I really like the model...but it is a "Light APC".
IMHO using true 25mm that would be a squad of six MAXIMUM. I use a mix
of 25-28mm and the GW orcs would not even fit through the hatch ;-) But
that is okay I got it for my "Star Wars" stormtroopers (I always liked their
armor better than the lame GW space marines).
FWIW I found the ultimate ORKY APC. It is from the movie "Wild Wild West". It
is a big, black kettle looking thing on six spikey wheels. I
figure even using GW 28mm orcs it could hold an entire PLATOON... Just
hope they miss with those tac. nukes! ;-))

Actually, I'd not consider it Aliens-APC like at all, in anything other
than general concept (ie: a low-profile interface portable wheeled APC).
The changes suggested above will make it a little bit Aliens like in overall
configuration, but it will still be very different.
> As I feared, the drop ship isn't available in the US. An
To give you the full story on this, actually KR wants to get this one quite
badly, but the problem is that I haven't got anything good enough to send
him as a master right now. The moulds for the 25-56 dropship are old and
failing, and I need to do some bits of reworking of the original before I
remould it - at the moment we are just casting the odd one or two out to
fill UK orders as they come in (and a couple to take to each show we
do).
The remodelling/remoulding is in the "to be done" pile, like so much
other stuff (FB2, FMA, BDS, sleep, food etc., etc..... you get the idea?).
When we get it revised for full production again, KR will get his masters and
be able to make it for the US market.
> Now, the Hammer's APC I've been hearing about... ;->=
Now those WILL be available in the US (the masters have been shipped over)
- I suggest you pester KR about release dates.... <grin>
