What happens if an aircraft gets a mobility chit? I know that invalid chits
are ignored (0's) but, what about a special chits? Joe

DSII rulebook, p.42, column 2, paragraph 3:

ALL chits are valid except Special damage chits, which are ignored.

There you go!

Without actually consulting the rules (hey, I only wrote 'em, don't expect me
to remember them too), I can't be sure if the aircraft rules say to ignore
special chits or not. If they don't, then I would say the pilot has
lost the engine and is consequently in BIIIIG trouble - either an
autopmatic crash, or maybe (if you're feeling charitable) a die roll to choose
between a) just enough power left to limp back to base, b) a controlled
crashlanding (if there is anywhere to do it) or c)
CRUNCH!...........

If the mobility special chit is considered, it would be prudent to buy backup
systems (engine!!) in case it is hit... I would think that only transports and
interface craft would really benifit, on the other hand, the
US military HAS completely gone away from single-engine designs, just
because of the special mobility chit (they play DS2 also!!), barring the
F-16 and the AV-8, of course. I know that the P-3 can shut down 3
engines to increase loiter time, so, one would think that it could lose an
engine
or two end still make it home, if not increase loiter or available-asset
time when undamaged. It would be devastating to an Assault Commander to loose
an entire unit (3 tanks) to a single lucky missile. Given number of mobility
chits (7) I think it would behoove any design to have backup engines...
especially considering that the chance of drawing a mobility chit is almost 6
percent.

What sort of aircraft designs along these lines has everyone come up with?

Joe

I'm reposting this. It seems some people missed it the first time through...

Aah yes... but does not the NOTE at the bottom of the table on pg 29 state
that "the "SPECIAL damage chits in the pot...are ALWAYS valid when drawn
against vehicle targets.."

does this mean that the p42 ruling only applies to ADS? What if the VTOL (or
whatever) is grounded at the time?

Dear Perplexed,

> Aah yes...

IIRC, the original question was about aerospace fighters. Since the only
things that can fire at aerospace fighters is ZAD and LAD, p42 overrides p.29.
As for VTOLs, I would say that they are simply immobilized. Remember that
airborne vehicles are already more fragile with their lower armor values.
Immobilized does not necessarily imply that the engines are out. It simply
means that it is not possible (or safe) to move the vehicle.

In a campaign setting, it is entirely up to you to decide what immobilized
means _after_ the game.
