much in keeping with the hottest moments of the main fleet action. 13. B5
season four intro <War against Clark> 14. Another tune from tehawesome

I'm always on the lookout for good gaming music. There's a lot of top notch
stuff being put out on comupter game CDs. In particular: Mechwarrior series by
Activision. Battlezone by Activision. Shattered Steel by Interplay Descent
Freespace by Interplay. The top three have audio tracks on the Cd so you can
play em straight. The last one I had to extract the music wavs convert MP3 or
burn as audio trakcs onto a C.
Even if you aren't in to these games, if you see them in the bargain bin for
ten bucks (or pounds, whatever) Then definately pick them up. Great space
combat stuff.
Perhaps we can pass some MP3s around.
Indulging briefly in off-topicness...

I would add 'High Roller' by The Crystal Method, because it samples NASA
transmissions. Not very war-sounding, but space-oriented nonetheless.
Sort of a cliche by now I guess, but the Imperial theme (forgot the exact
name) from Empire Strikes Back is pretty good.
Gee, just for the fun of it, here's a playlist (somewhat tenative) for a tape

possible. "Space" means the opposite. I'm not *entirely* happy with the
placement of (and transition between) all the titles, but what the heck, it's
pretty good. And the move from the Mechwarrior music to Star Wars
is... neat. ^_^ So's the move from Into the Trap (from Jedi) to TIE
Fighter Attack (Falcon escaping Death Star in Star Wars).
Anyway, it's not really entirely space-based, and I'm thinking I may
want to throw in some B5 (got the Severed Dreams CD after this list was made
up) or maybe something from Ben Hur. Dunno, I need to play around a bit... if
anyone else actually has all the CDs I use above, though, I'll be very
impressed with your CD collection. ^_^;

The Imperial March. Not cliche; it's classic...frankly, all of the ST battle
music would fit (naturally.) A bit genre specific, however.
So long as we're voting for soundtrack cuts: most, if not all of Conan (Basil
Pouleadouris again), and selected bits from Fifth Element and Stargate would
work. Add the orchestral bits from Macross Plus (great fighter combat music)
and the opening theme to Terminator as kickoff music. There are some
orchestral cuts from the 3 Escaflowne soundtracks that make great battle music
(brooding, driving music, with strong male chorus chanting in the background.)
Mononoke Hime St also has some great
tension-building cuts. A touch of Lodoss here and there to round things
out.
For long, drawn out slugfests: Le Marche Slav by Taichovsky... and 1812
Overture too. Kinda weak on classical otherwise. Vivaldi just doesn't seem to
fit.

I'll be poking around for some of this stuff as I'm always on the lookout for
good gaming music. I've got Ben Hur, I use some of that on my Ancients and
Napoleanics gaming CD. The naval battle mix is very good.
BTW another great tune for fighter combat is called Battle in teh Sky. If you
have seen the Battle of Britain, its the orchestral peice accompanying the
last great air battle in the movie. I just acquired a copy of both Battle of
Britain and Where Eagle's Dare last month. Excellent stuff by Ron Goodwin.
The THING by Ennio Morricone came in the mail today. It aslo has some good
ominous stuff in it.

Hmm...what can I say. TCM is a techno group out of Las Vegas. They have one
album out, 'Vegas'. The song I mentioned has repeated samples of someone
saying "I can see the Earth now" and "this is tranismission is coming to
you...". I assume these are NASA samples because the liner notes say
'special thanks to so-and-so (can't remember the name) at NASA'. Oh, I
know. Have you seen the Gap 'Khakis Rock' commercial? The one with
skateboarders and rollerbladers? The music in the background is TCM.
A lot of the songs have kind of a 'sci-fi' feel to them to me.

It's a great track but it's not the one you're thinking of. My Kingdom doesn't
as far as I know sample Blade Runner. At least not that I can recognise (which
may in itself be the sign of an expert sampler). There was
a d/lable intro to Blizzard's Starcraft : Brood War that had a large
space battle played out to a solo piece of piano music I didn't recognise. I
thought it was an odd choice at first but in the end it was strangely
appropriate.
The way I see it there are two ways to go with this - there's your big
operatic Mars/Carmina burana route, or there's more 'up to date' high
power
stuff . There are quite a few indie/ techno pieces I could name that
would fit a big fleet action well.

and of course, we should mention wipeout and wipeout 2907; the in-game
music was so good they sold it as a standalone album. in the uk, trailers for
starship troopers had blur's 'song two' played over them, so if you're looking
for Music for Drops that's your bunny. there's a track called 'inanga' by a
band called 'fortran five' (which is in itself remarkable)
which samples quite a bit of apocalypse now - roughly from the scene of
the priest holding mass in a burning village to the air cav assault with the
vagner. i have to say that in my experience, the best thing is to pick
a genre both/all players like and play records constantly. this worked
great with my last regular opponent as we were both into techno. it may not

Nyrath,
If you liked the soundtracks to the first two Star Trek movies(V'Ger and Wrath
of Khan), definitely look into finding Battle Beyond The Stars. They were done
by James Horner with a decent amount of "similiarity" to them.
Net-gossip has it that he wasn't entirely thrilled with the way Battle
Beyond... turned out but still... What does HE know? He only wrote it. =WE=
listen to it...;)
The tracks did fit very nicely into the Adler Tag game though. Watching your
helpless (heh) Kra'Vak SDs getting totally mauled by unstoppable fighter
waves, all to the tune of some appropriate music really made the game. Of
course, seeing the Rail Guns take out the bridge of the fleet flagship wasn't
so bad either.... <G>

Music from the Rock soundtrack (Movie with Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage),
music from the rarer Hunt for Red October sound track (excellent orchestral
stuff, fast paced), Danger Zone from (shudder) the Top Gun soundtrack (for
your Fighter Jockeys), and of course anything military with the Bagpipes....

Aye, lots of stuff by Verdi (for those who don't know, that's an aria from
Lucia di Lammermoor, which is sorta Romeo and Juliet in a Scottish setting, by
an Italian composer and sung in Italian, which doesn't stop it from being
hauntingly beautiful) is good. Bits from Aida would also go well, especially
Triumphal March. The entire Massa da Requiem provides just the right dark
mood. Swinging over into German music, Wagner wrote more than the Valkyrie!
Der Fliegende Hollander, or really
any of his overtures. Post-battle would definitely be Siegfried's Death
and Funeral March, (especially for the flyboys who got waxed!). The Russians
provide March Slav, 1812 Overture, and Mussorgsky's Great Gate of Kiev & Night
on Bald Mountain.
Also, anything with bagpipes is ideal for fighting to.:)

Not to mention the blatant violation of intellectual property rights (and
thereby the laws that govern them, which are, to varying
degrees, applicable in all of our respective countries - unless we
have some lurkers from some of the Pacific Rim areas where copyright laws are
rather weak and poorly enforced). I'd hate to see list members publicly engage
in activities which could get them busted (especially when we all know the NSA
actually monitors all email traffic with massive AI systems... and if it
doesn't now, the NAC RSA of 2185 certainly will and I'd hate to see the Flag
Staff victorious over the Hellspawn Kravak be dragged off in Force Manacles
for failing to maintain CommSec.....).
I'm sure we can all discuss what we think of as great music, and make
recommendations to each other about which music to buy, and maybe about where
to buy it. But I think burning CDs would be questionable (all right, downright
illegal). I'm not even sure that my own practice of burning remixes from CDs I
own is legal, although I'm quite sure the artists already received royalties
from the albums from me since I did buy them.
Anyway, this is a games forum, and it does bring to mind the question of what
some of the National anthems in 2185 sound like...
I assume the NAC anthem is God Save The King. What about the OU? and is FCT
the last preserver of the Star Spangled Banner or is it something like The
Yellow Rose of Texas? (grin). What about the ESU? Something Chinese? And the
NSL (Neu Swabian League Uber Alles
perhaps? Or, as mentioned previously, something by VAG-ner?). And
what of the FSE? Le Marseille?
Just curious to solicit opinions.

On another *note* (duck), as far as National anthems go, when my small ESU

First off, I'm not a lawyer and know almost nothing about copyright law so
everything I say here is just my opinion. Also, the situation may be different
outside of the United States.
It is NOT ok to sell recordings of music or even give them away. The music
business works hard to protect their copyrights, I mean the recording
corparations not so much the musicians. In addition it is against the law and
if caught (which would be very unlikely) would be required to pay fines.
Whether or
not the companies/musicians would missing out on any money because
of these copies doesn't matter.
I'm not putting down anyone who makes CD's such as is being discussed. I just
want to make clear what the legality of doing so is. A lot of people do it,
and in most cases no harm is done to the companies or musicians, so it doesn't
bother me.
Enjoy,

Gawd, but I love synchronicity. Just today, I was at the "Healing Power of
Obnoxiousness" webpage, and I read the following passage in Paul Riddel's
essay about movie soundtracks:
"Exhibit C: If you've bought one John Horner album, you've bought them all.
Okay, so John Williams is a hack who struck it rich with Star Wars and Raiders
of the Lost Ark and went right down the rathole ever since, but the only time
he recycled soundtracks was with Return of the Jedi, and the nits who enjoyed
that ripoff couldn't pick pimples off their own asses. John Horner, though,
can't do anything but: the soundtrack to Battle Beyond the Stars sounds just
like Humanoids From the Deep sounds just like Star Trek II sounds just like
Krull sounds just like Star Trek III sounds just like Aliens...well, you get
the idea.
"What's worse is that, as noted former Dallas Observer movie critic Matt
Zoller Seitz will tell you, one track to the Aliens soundtrack, entitled
"Futile Escape", pops up as the background music in nearly every preview in
recent memory, Timecop being the most recent example. (A close second is the
"St. Crispin's Day" theme from Patrick Doyle's Henry V soundtrack, but this
way lies madness.) Not only is this piece just like every other action score
he's ever done, but now it's ingrained into the American
movie-going
psyche. I mean, it's a fun score, but let's get serious..."
I recommend his web page (http://www.cyberramp.net/~priddell/) for
anyone who likes both Harlan Ellison and Hunter Thompson. Riddell is a man
with opinions about SF, and lot of them. (His low opinion of George Lucas is
stated well and often) Even if you disagree with him, he makes entertaining
reading.
But that's just my opinion.
And I am generally considered to be pretty odd.
And this is getting increasingly off-topic.
So I'll just stop now.
Bye!
