Los spake thusly upon matters weighty:

Yes, and fast moving getting the pictures on the Net. Nice work. Sounds like
fun. Can't wait to get you guys across a gaming table. Probably at Lancaster
this February (bring lots of damage control
teams). :)

On another front, this comment above brings to mind a question (of historical
background): What decorations are used by the various forces?

Does NAC use both CMH and Victoria Cross? Does ESU use Order of the Soviet
Union (what have they got since that broke up?) and some Asian Medals? What
about NSL (Grand Cross of the Order of the Iron Cross, or what?). And the OU?
Presumably not the VC anymore. And those Romanovs must have some medals to
give out too.

Any comments or suggestions from the list?

(And Mr. John Atkinson of Imperium Nea-Romanum, I'm sure with the
huge volume of work you've done on the Nea Rhomanoi, you must have some
suggestions for what THEY would use for
medals/decorations/awards for service, and I'd be interested to hear
your thoughts too).:)

I'll bet the CMOH is defunct, VC still gets handed out.

Order of the Solar Union, of course.

Ja.

Romanovs would use the Order of St. Andrew, a pre-revolution order which
has been recently revived in the Russian Fed. as well as other
pre-Revolution orders.

Weren't Aussies brave before then or did that have something to do with the
pomms? <g>

Us Aussies are a strange lot so we'd probably keep the VC. Afterall all but 1
of our 98 VC's have been won since we became an independant nation and even
with the reform of military awards (and civil ones) recently (2 yrs ago) we
still retain it as the highest award. Someone else on the list might be able
to explain our current system. All my info is 10 years old.

I dont know what awards the Byzantines used but the real Romans used a series
of crowns as awards which were each for particular feats of bravery and not
for brave, really brave and almost stupidly brave as we have today. The "grass
crown" (corona graminea) was for saving an entire legion. The
"civic crown" (corona civia) was for saving the life/lives of a
citizen/s.
The "walled crown" (corona murlis) for the first individual to gain a enemy
held wall during an assault. There was also a "naval crown" that I know of and
perhaps others. Another award was the "phalerae" which were metal dics or
rings worn on a leather 'harness' over armour or uniform. What they signified
I dont know.

*Ack, sputter* Byzantines not Real Romans? HRUMPH! They had the Senate until
the Comnenii got rid of it. Where's that lovely
tongue-lashing a Patrician gave to a papal envoy who had the gall to
refer to the Roman Emperor as "Emperor of the Greeks". Something really
poetical that ended with referring to Old Rome as a city full of nothing but
confectioners and slaves.

Why a confectioner is considered to be a less-than honorable profession,
on a level with slaves, is beyond me.

The first Australian VC was awarded to a doctor in the Sudan campaign in the
1880's. A couple of field ambulances went and as such were the first
Australian troops to serve overseas which we've been doing every since. IIRC
no Australian got one in the Boer war but I could be wrong. About 40 or so
were won in WWI with fewer awarded in WWII and 4 in Vietnam. We didn't get any
VCs earlier because the pomms never used Australian colonial troops. Even
during the Boer war Australian units could not be more than 150 men strong.
Makes you wonder if the Pomms trusted us.

Nah, it wasn`t a matter of trust. Why should the English use Aussies who live
miles away when they could use the Scots and the Irish who live next door and
are thus more of a threat. Net result, we go out, we conquer an empire, we let
