Currently, in the Fleet Book, you can't do this with ADFC's either. All
ADFC's do is allow you to fire PDS at fighters/missiles that are
attacking one other friendly ship that is within 6" of your ADFC equipped
ship. This is a change from the 2nd edition ADAF. It does NOT allow you to
attack any
fighter/missiles within range.

This extended one of my gripes from the 2nd edition rules (and made it worse).
That is a player can place a huge number of fighters within spitting distance
from an enemy ship, and unless he targets the ship the enemy ship can do
NOTHING about it!

PDS should be able to attack any fighter/missile within its range. ADFC
should allow PDS' from all ships within 6" of each other to combine and
coordinate fire with a maximum range of 6" from the ship closest to the
fighters/missiles (maximum range of 12" from any ship in the ADFC
network).

AGREED, but its going to have to be a de-facto house rule, unless
we can convince JT for FT3.

Hmmm I don't hear enough from the dis-agree camp so here I go :-)

They way I understand the scales of the game (1mu = 1000km) I think that a
15m*10m (fighter sized) object would be pretty much invisible unless it was
actively coming after you.

The fighters would make heavy use of stealth techonology (active and passive).
To avoid using their own 'radar' for searches they would probably
receive target info on tight-band laser communications from the 'mother
ship'.

Now when the attack runs start I can see them 'lighting up' with active ECM
and on-board targeting systems making them visible.

Anyway, fighters seem to get slaughtered efficiently enough without having
everybody gunning for them.

Unless you have fighter groups with which to counter - these are very
effective. Usually 1 defensive group can tie up two attacking groups unless
the attacker is very careful about positioning. Granted that your group will
perish, but by that time, your ships may have passed by or achieved their
objective.

On the other hand, having a group of fighters in the middle of an enemy fleet,
untouched so long as they do not attack, seems slightly unrealistic.
