Subject: A Newbie...

Hi people.

I just thought I'd introduce myself. I'm a newbie to the list and Full Thrust,
but not the net or wargaming. I'm a moderate painter, and like writing
rules/fiction/senarios for various games. I was only introduce to the
game 2 days ago, but already I'm beginning to like it's simplicity.

I have one question for the list (and I hope it's like the 40k list in terms
of friendliness). It may seem rather minor, but hey....

When writing the movement orders in the box, what do you write?

FREX, would you write the thrust, course change AND the direction of the

course change or something else?

Do people use some kind of convinient shorthand to save time/effort?

And lastly, does anyone know of any good web pages where I can look at a few
of the models? I only have the basic rulebook. I'm very interested in a set of
models I saw for a game called "Silent Death". They're acrylic, and come in a
set of 48 for 12 UKP. I think the company name was "Combat Zone" or similar.
Do they have a webpage?

TTYL ppl.

You'll find a short hand method in the basic rule book on pg.7 under the

heading MOVEMENT ORDERS, second paragraph. basicly it looks like this:

P2+4 Which translates A 2 point turn to port and an acceleration of 4.

For example a ship heading direction 12 at a velocity of 4 would find its self
with a new heading of 10 and a velocity of 8.

The silent death mins aren't bad but they really, IMHO, doent give the proper
feel for fleet type ships. They are ment to represent fighters. Check Geohex's
site. They have pics of the official mins and you can order them also.

Friendliness? Noway! This place is torrid with...er...uhhh...well, something.
;-)

> When writing the movement orders in the box, what do you write?

When playing in RL we ('we' being people I play with ;-) generally would
write:

    1P+2

if we wanted a given ship to turn 1 to the port and accelerate by 2, or

    2S-4

if we wanted a given ship to turn 2 to starboard and decel by 4.

When I run PBeM games I prefer the players to submit orders that include the
previous turn's heading and speed, the proposed movement plot (the
aforementioned '1P+2' or '2S-4' or something to that effect), and then
their new heading and speed. This is generally a sanity-check sort of
proceeding, to make sure what I have matches with the way they think
things are. :-)

There are some out there, but I don't know the URLs offhand. :-(

Damn. Missed it:(.

Still, now I know.

Kewl.

I had a look at this the other night; it seems a little (!?!) slow to load.

Thanks. And as a note to the 'list; I don't seem to be getting much mail. Is
this normal? The 40k list churns out _loads_ more.

You'll find the list pretty friendly. And I'm a big believer in there being no
such thing as a minor or stupid question.

> When writing the movement orders in the box, what do you write?

I use the following shorthand: dt+a
where d is the direction, and is either S (starboard) or P (port); t is the
number of points you turn (between 1 and 4); a is the number of thrust points
of acceleration.

For example, if a ship turns 2 points to port and accelerates by two thrust
points, the order would be: 2P+2. If a ship decelerates by 1 point and
turns
1 point to port, it would be: 1P-1. If the ship accelerates by 4 points
but
goes straight, the order would be: +4. If the ship turns 3 points to
starboard but does not change speed, the order is: 3S+0. If the ship
moves
straight ahead without changing speed the order is: +0.

I use this in my play-by-email game as well as face-to-face and it works
well.

> And lastly, does anyone know of any good web pages where I can look at

I'm not sure about web pages, but Silent Death is a very good miniature game
involving fighters and gunboats. Many of the Full Thrust players on this list
also play Silent Death. It has its own mailing list (I'm not sure what the
address is) and web pages. Do a search on Silent Death or Iron Crown
Enterprises (the company that makes the game). I believe that Combat Zone is
the name of the box set that only includes the miniatures.

A lot of people use the miniatures with Full Thrust. Since they are aimed at
different scales, people usually kitbash the figures to make them look like
capital ships. There is a new line of lead gunboats for use with the Silent
Death gunboat rules; these work well as capital ships right out of the blister
pack.

Dunno about the 40k list, but this list is _much_ friendlier than
r.g.m.warhammer <g>

> And lastly, does anyone know of any good web pages where I can look at

I don't remember the address right now, but do a web search for "Iron Crown
Enterprises". They do have a web page, but no pictures of any models. I'm not
sure about RAFM (...they make the metal versions of the models, and probably
the plastics too; there are currently 36 different human fighter designs, 6
'alien' fighters (the old Hatchling fighter models are still available) and 6
larger ships (representing small escorts, but even a small escort is much
larger than a fighter!)).

The metal models are US$5 per blister (plus packing etc:(), with a blister
containing one big, two medium or up to four small ships. More expensive than
the plastic ones, but you won't get any Blizzards or Kosmoses when you buy
plastics. (Biased? Who? Me? Nah...;)

Silent Death is about starfighter combat, with each model representing a

ship massing 60 - 1000 tons, with a few larger gunboats and escorts. The

figher models mostly look like... one- or two-person craft, but a little

converting turns them into quite nice escorts and cruisers. (Cut the wings off
the Teal Hawk and smooth out the crew cabin with some milliput

- voila! An EW-equipped escort with a large sensor dome...) The Warhound

models and Hatchlings are (IMO) fine as they are.

Someone mentioned Geo-Hex and the 'official' models. Don't let 'em fool
you; although those ships are produced by/for GZG, they are no more
'official' than any other models you like! (...especially not if you design
your own gaming universe, or play in some other background than the one given
in FT...) So far, Jon Tuffley has been very clear on that point. I hope he
doesn't slide into a position of 'FT is played with these specific models,
Amen'... like certain other companies have done
:(

I hope not too.

But then again, the models are damned good.

Always a little slow on weekends. As you _may_ have noticed, it picks up
come
Monday. ;-)
