Okay this is hopefully an easy one, but it's been bugging me for a while now.
When playing FT at a scale smaller than 1", do weapons that have an area
effect: Nova Cannon, Wave Gun,...reduce the size of the templates for damage,
or does it ALWAYS remain at the sizes listed in the rules.

thanks

How powerful do you want them to be? With the templates fixed but movement
only say 1/2" the effect is the weapon covers more area. I'd be tempted
to use a template adjusted more towards this. The problem comes if you are
using "normal" size ships than you can't cover as many ships. A good
compromise would be to use a template say 3/4ths the size of the
"standard" size.

Since all other parts of the rules measure in inches - weapon ranges,
for
example - and all those measurements are re-scaled when you change
measuring units, I'd recommend you to change the size of the templates too.

Mind you, it's b****y difficult to hit anything with a 2cm template...

I always thought the model and ground scale were obviously mismatched anyway
(as it is with practically every miniatures game), so we use the position of
the stand pole as the "real" position of the ship.

In this case, it doesn't really matter what size your figures are. Except that
most people are reluctant to place their figures touching...

Yes, that is the usual way whatever measurement units you use; what I was
referring to is that if you use cm you may find that you simply can't get the
models close enough together because of their physical size, as you mentioned
in your next sentence. Of course, there is nothing to stop you
using smaller models to represent bigger ships - when using cm you could
treat an FT model corvette as a destroyer, a destroyer mini as a cruiser and a
cruiser as a capital ship!
